Have you ever felt anxious even when nothing seems to be wrong?
Maybe your phone rings, and you immediately think something bad has happened.
Maybe your boss says, “Can we talk tomorrow?” and your mind spends the entire night imagining the worst.
Or perhaps you lie in bed, exhausted, but your mind refuses to switch off.
What if something goes wrong?
What if I made a mistake?
What if I can't handle what happens next?
For many people, this is what anxiety can feel like—your mind constantly preparing for problems that haven't even happened yet.
What are the common signs of anxiety?
Anxiety doesn't always look like a panic attack or a racing heart. Sometimes, it looks like constantly checking your phone, overthinking conversations, struggling to make decisions, expecting the worst, or replaying the same thoughts again and again.
You may look completely calm on the outside while, inside, your mind is running a marathon.
One of the most frustrating things about anxiety is that you often know you're overthinking. You may tell yourself to calm down, but your thoughts keep coming.
How can you calm anxiety?
Start by bringing yourself back to the present.
Instead of asking, “What if something goes wrong?”, ask yourself:
“What is actually happening right now?”
Take a slow breath. Notice your surroundings. Separate what you know from what anxiety is making you imagine.
A helpful reminder is:
A thought is not always a fact.
You don't have to solve every problem your mind creates. You don't have to prepare for every possible outcome.
And if anxiety is constantly affecting your sleep, work, relationships or everyday life, talking to a qualified mental health professional can help.
You are not weak because you feel anxious.
Sometimes, peace doesn't come from finding an answer to every thought.
It comes from learning that you don't have to believe every thought that enters your mind.
