One thing I hear quite often from couples is, “We don't really talk anymore.”

And usually, they don't mean they never speak.

They talk about the children, work, bills, dinner, household responsibilities and what needs to be done tomorrow. But somewhere along the way, they have stopped talking about each other.

Why Do Couples Stop Talking?

In my 15+ years of working as a psychologist and relationship expert, I have seen this happen even in couples who still love each other.

Sometimes, couples stop talking because every conversation seems to turn into an argument. One says, “You never listen to me,” and the other immediately responds, “Because you're always complaining.”

After having the same conversation again and again, silence can start feeling easier.

But silence doesn't necessarily mean there is peace. Sometimes, it means there is hurt, resentment or emotional exhaustion underneath it.

This is where emotional disconnection can slowly creep into a relationship.

Understanding Bids for Connection

John Gottman's work on bids for connection offers a useful way of understanding this. When your partner says, “Look what happened today,” or “Can I tell you something?”, it may seem small. But underneath it may simply be a request for connection.

How Can Couples Reconnect?

Sometimes, reconnecting starts with very ordinary things.

Put your phone away.

Ask, “How was your day?” and actually listen.

Sit together without trying to solve anything.

Tell your partner, “I know we've been distant lately. I don't want us to stay like this.”

These small moments matter.

When Couples May Need Professional Support

And if every attempt at communication ends in conflict, relationship counselling, couples therapy or marriage counselling can help. It can give couples a safe space to understand their communication patterns, rebuild trust and work on emotional intimacy.
